The Expat’s Guide to Creating a Daily Routine That Feels Like Home
Having lived on three continents as an adult, I know firsthand how important it is to make your new home feel like home. When you move to a new city or country, the things you once took for granted—like a daily routine—suddenly become essential, not just a nice-to-have.
Why Routine Matters
1. Stability & Reduced Stress
A routine creates structure and predictability, helping to ease stress and anxiety. Knowing what to expect gives you a sense of control—something especially valuable in times of change.
2. Increased Productivity & Focus
A set routine reduces decision fatigue and distractions, allowing you to use your time more efficiently. When daily habits become automatic, you free up energy for the things that truly matter—like building connections and exploring your new surroundings.
How to Build a Routine as an Expat
1. Get Creative with Your Old Routines
Think about what you enjoyed in your previous city and how you can adapt it to your new environment. Maybe early morning walks were part of your day, but your new location doesn’t allow for that. Instead, research local parks or neighborhoods and plan weekend walks instead of daily ones.
If your usual routine doesn’t fit, find an alternative—a gym, a yoga class, or a fitness group near work. Be open to trying new things—you might just discover a new passion.
2. Bring Small Comforts from Home
Little things can make a big difference. Whether it’s your favourite coffee mug, a snack from home, or a beloved radio station(which you can stream online), incorporating familiar comforts into your day can create a sense of stability. As a South African, I always make sure to have Rooibos tea in my routine—it’s a small habit that brings a big sense of comfort.
3. Keep Moving
Moving to a new city is a perfect chance to refresh your lifestyle. Maybe you’ve always wanted to cycle, and now your city has rental bikes—why not bike to work? Or perhaps you’ve found a beautiful park that hosts free yoga classes on Saturdays—join in! Physical activity releases happy endorphins and can help you feel more balanced as you settle in.
Routine isn’t just about structure—it’s about creating a life that feels good. If you need help designing a routine that fits your new reality, reach out! As an expat coach, I’d love to help you find your flow in your new city.
